# Uploading files: File Manager and FTP

https://vmshost.io/kb/a/uploading-files-file-manager-and-ftp

There are two ways to put files on your hosting account: File Manager in your browser, or an FTP program on your computer.

## Small changes: File Manager

For a few files, or to edit a file such as `.env`, use File Manager. Open your hosting plan in **Services** and click **File Manager** in Quick Actions or on the Management tab.

File Manager can upload files and extract `.zip` archives. To upload a lot of files, zip them on your computer, upload the zip file, and extract it in File Manager.

## Many files: SFTP

1. Install an SFTP program. We recommend [WinSCP](https://winscp.net/) on Windows or [FileZilla](https://filezilla-project.org/) on Windows, macOS and Linux.
2. Connect with these settings:
  - **Protocol:** SFTP
  - **Host:** cpanel.vmshost.io
  - **Port:** 22
  - **Username and password:** your cPanel username and password. Both are on the **Overview** tab of your hosting plan.

SFTP encrypts your password and your files while they upload.

### Give someone access to one folder

To let someone else upload files without your cPanel password, create an FTP account that can only reach one folder:

1. Open your hosting plan in **Services** and click **FTP Accounts**. This opens the FTP Accounts page in cPanel.
2. Create the account and choose its folder.
3. Next to the account, click **Configure FTP Client**. It shows the server, username and port for their FTP program.
4. Ask them to select **FTP over TLS** (explicit) in their FTP program, so that the password is encrypted.

## Where your files go

- Your main domain uses the `public_html` folder.
- Each addon domain and subdomain has its own folder. You choose the folder when you create the domain in cPanel.
- phpVMS keeps its main files outside the public folder. See "Important Locations" in [Install phpVMS with the installer](https://vmshost.io/knowledgebase/article/setting-up-phpvms).
