# Fix installer 404 and permission errors

## The installer shows "404 Not Found"

If you get a 404 page when you go to your new phpVMS site, check these:

1. **The document root.** Your domain or subdomain must point to the phpVMS `public` folder. To check a subdomain, open **Subdomains** on the **Management** tab and look at its document root. See [Choose where phpVMS lives](https://vmshost.io/knowledgebase/article/phpvms-folder-layout).
2. **The upload.** Check that all the files were uploaded and extracted. If an upload stopped part of the way, upload the package again and extract it.
3. **The .htaccess file.** The `public` folder must contain a file named `.htaccess`. It's a hidden file, and some FTP programs skip hidden files. Our File Manager shows hidden files, so you can check that it's there: open **File Manager** on the **Management** tab and look in the `public` folder.

## The installer reports folder permission errors

The installer's requirements check lists the folders that phpVMS must be able to write to. If any of them fail, set their permissions to `775`:

- `bootstrap`
- `bootstrap/cache`
- `storage/logs`
- `storage/framework/cache`
- `storage/framework/sessions`
- `storage/framework/views`

To change permissions, open **File Manager** on the **Management** tab and go to the folder. In the **Permissions** column, click the folder's current value (for example `0755`), set it to `775`, and save. Change each folder in the list one at a time.

If the check still fails, open a ticket and include a screenshot of the requirements page.
